The 8 Most Common Digital Bottlenecks
 |  Fundamentals

This is a round up of the digital elements that play the largest role in sucking the life/time/money for most people. The list is based on research and my experience over the past decade as a consultant in IT, Business and New Media. Put simply, these are the bread and butter money makers for guys like me, (IT and Media professionals), and the sources of the most frustration for the average connected. The truth is we are all guilty of looking for solutions that do all the work for us and by doing so, we develop bad habits and surrender all control and freedom.  Many people are looking for ways to step in and reclaim control of their digital lifestyles to save time and money and change their ways of blind consumption and laziness. All of these bad habits and resource pits can be overcome with practical solutions and alternatives offered with lessons of digital liquidity.

1. Email programs like Outlook.

Most of my support requests by my IT clients are focused on issues with Outlook. It’s buggy. It crashes, freezes, can’t keep up with modern demand and  the whole system and doesn’t play nice with others. It is a dinosaur compared to other solutions out there and it costs people thousands  a year in lost time and repairs.

2. Security Software.

Your top security software providers are the  2nd largest cause of issues resulting in lost time and resources. These fear mongering, subscription seeking, control freaks cripple computer performance, block many legitimate programs and technologies and disrupt flow of work and life. There are better solutions out there that cost a fraction of the price while offering better protection and without trying to rule your computer.

3. Horrible Purchasing Decisions in Technology, Especially Hardware.

IE if you recently bought your first generation iPad, this one’s for you.

Choosing hardware is like choosing a house. A little piece of you will live in each device you purchase. Yet many people purchase cages, run down, chanteys and tent equivalents; choosing to buy slow, out-dated computers, finicky hardware and closed devices. People confuse buying cheap with getting a deal but purchasing slow and closed systems at discount will leave you feeling slow, confined, frustrated and broke. The hardware you use serves as the foundation and framework of your digital lifestyle. Buying solutions from brands and companies that prefer proprietary formats and devices is an open invitation to controlling your digital lifestyle.

4. Media Management Software

You notice that we don’t remember anyone’s phone number anymore. A similar thing is happening to music and movies with management software. Many people don’t even know where on their computer the files are stored. They can only find them through iTunes or Windows Media Player. As a result, these programs effectively take control over your digital lifestyle and ask you to make redundant purchases of things you already own so you can put them on your separate devices and computers. This is a huge waste of time and money.

5. Social Networks and Mismanaged Web Presence

How many different social networks are you on? How often do you find yourself updating multiple places- Twitter/Facebook/MySpace/Hi5/ etc.? This is why social networks and mismanaged web presence earn it a spot on the list. My clients often tell me they feel scattered across social networks and their web presence and feel that they must choose between a real life and virtual community.

6. Searching the web.

#1 overlooked Time suck vacuum and under-developed, under taught skill. People don’t take into account how much time they spend searching for stuff. You can find the answer to almost any question on the web if you know where to look. When you pay someone to troubleshoot a specific computer issue, you are basically paying someone else to do the searching for you. It is a skill though that takes special language, a keen eye and some nifty techniques to filter through SEO garbage.

7. Documents and Image management.

Many people keep their files in horrible order at home and at work.  Without a system, files and folders are often scattered across many devices, in multiple versions, out of sync out of place and often times are re-created simply because they cannot be found.

8. Interference from your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Your gatekeeper to the Internet can have an incredible impact on your life. You may be getting blocked or redirected from certain content and technologies. For example, if you browse the Internet on your iPhone, you can only browse a censored version of the web that cannot display FLASH or access thousands of popular web resources and applications. If you download torrents with certain providers you may find your connection throttled down, cut or redirected to the your provider’s content store. As Service providers look to increase their profits, they may attempt to put in toll roads, find new fee tactics and tier your Internet Access, placing you at the back of the line for a Google Search. Most people haven’t a clue about the provider policies that affect them. Don’t worry, I can help.
